10 Films You Don't Want To Miss On Netflix Right Now

It's Saturday night.

But you're past the stage of going out-out. Staying in is the new going out.

That guy's coming over. The one you met on Tinder. Although if anyone asks, you didn't meet on Tinder. You met at one of the clubs you don't go to anymore.

You've bought in a pizza and some ice cream. You're really hoping he isn't on a health kick.

You close your eyes. You begin to manifest the evening. Isn't this what athletes and what-not do? You imagine him coming into your flat. He takes off his shoes. They're blue unbranded trainers (bit of an ick) but you can see past it. You walk him through to the lounge, via the kitchen, and make an effort to point out that you bought in the pizza and ice cream specially for him. But if he'd rather you ordered in a salad, that was cool too. You love a salad.

You put the pizza in the oven (or order the salad) and sit on the sofa.

It's not that you don't have anything to talk about. Buttt having a common talking point would help. Ok, now it's getting a bit awkward. Your eyes dart round the room looking for something to point out but the most interesting thing in your house is the Christmas tinsel that still hasn't been put away. It’s March.

The silence has gone on too long now. And the pizza still needs another ten minutes in the oven. You should have done something else. What had the other idea been? Cinema? Why hadn't you agreed on the cinema?

You open your eyes. Halt the panic. You've got ten minutes before he arrives. You can still save it.

You switch on the TV and load up Netflix.

Netflix Streaming will save the date.

In particular, Netflix films will get rid of those awkward first date silences and give you something to chat about. Laugh about. Cry about. Have on as background noise as you do-whatever-you-want-to-do about.

But what to watch with Netflix streaming? That’s the one remaining question.

Worry not. We’ve got you covered.

Here’s the top ten Netflix films we’d recommend right now.

1. The Electric Slate

It’s time to reimagine the 1990s. Forget Nintendo, boy bands and rollerblades. In The Electric Slate, that was all cut short by a war between humans and robots. In this dystopian 90s world, humans are isolated in VR helmets and robots banished to a remote wasteland. Teenager Michelle – played by Millie Bobby Brown – sets out on a mission to find her brother who she lost in a car crash. She’s joined by Cosmo – a robot – and Keats – a smuggler.

It's a film exploring loss, family and the effects of technology and war. And leaves us feeling thankful the worst we experienced in the 90s was double denim.

2. The Twister: Caught in the Storm

Hard-hitting is an understatement. The Twister: Caught in the Storm revisits the devasting 2011 Joplin tornado with a harrowing reality. It focuses on a group of young people in Missouri on possibly the most memorable day of their lives. Their graduation day. And the day the EF-5 tornado struck their town. Told through the voices of those who were there, the documentary is first-hand account of the disaster, and features real-time footage.

The Twister: Caught in the Storm promises to leave you shocked by the power of nature. But also by the power of community.

3. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera

A sequel that isn’t a letdown. Following on from the 2018 film, Big Nick is back on the hunt in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. His mission? Call curtains for diamond robbers in Europe, and stop career criminal Donnie Wilson once and for all. It won’t be an easy job. The robbers are part of the Panther mafia, and snatched the massive red diamond as part of a heist in Antwerp. Dressed as tactical police. From an airplane hangar. Talk about a gritty action movie.

The relationship between Big Nick and Donnie makes this film. Begrudging respect blossoms. Their camaraderie allows you to question the blurred lines of good and evil. The grey area between good and bad. The pursuit of freedom and justice.

4. Kraven the Hunter

Another recommendation for you action / adventure lovers. And the Marvel lovers amongst you. Kraven the Hunter is based on the Marvel character of the same name. A complicated relationship with his stony-hearted father propels Kraven down a path of vengeance. His goal? To become the greatest hunter in the world. And the most feared. Kraven the Hunter is full of action. It’s got drug trafficking. Lions. Buffalos.

And also some deeper themes. Vengeance and family dynamics. Humanity versus nature. The burden of legacy.

5. A Quiet place: Day One

Sssssh. No – seriously – sssssh! In A Quiet Place: Day One, you have no choice but to live in silence. That popcorn wrapper your currently rattling? That would have you killed. The film is set in a world similar to ours, but with one difference. Mysterious monsters destroy anything that makes a sound. Evelyn and Lee seek to find a way to protect their children. And determined to find a way to fight back.

A Quiet Place: Day One gets you thinking about the importance of communication, especially in traumatic situations. It’s ok. You can rattle your popcorn wrapper now.

6. Plankton: The Movie

Who doesn’t love Spongebob SquarePants? Alas, Spongebob isn’t the star of the show this time round. Plankton is. Or possibly his computer wife, Karen. Plankton’s plans for world domination are stopped in their tracks when Karen decides to take charge. Spongebob fans worry not, however. Your cuboid-shaped yellow friend does get his airtime. Plankton enlists Spongebob’s help to try and get on the same page as Karen.

It's all a bit mad, but Plankton: The Movie is sure to make you smile. Who doesn’t love a movie focused on the domestic between a restaurant-owning computer and water-based organism?

7. Despicable Me 4

You don’t want to know how many years it’s been since the minions first came onto our screens. Spoiler: it’s fifteen years. Despicable Me came out in 2015, and since Gru and his minions have kept returning with humorous yet heart-warming appeal. In Despicable Me 4, Gru Jr. joins the family. However, looking after his mischievous son isn’t top of Gru’s priority list for long. Criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal escapes from prison and is set to revenge Gru

Just like the Despicable Me movies before it, Despicable Me 4 highlights the strength of love and family in all forms. Even small, round and yellow.

8. Morbius

Marvel really have made their presence known in the Top 10 this week. This time? It’s vampires. However, Micheal Morbius starts out life as anything but a bloody thirsty savage. Throughout his childhood, Morbius struggled with a rare blood disorder. Now a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, he knows his days are numbered. He’s determined to find a cure. For himself, and for others.

But his remedy isn’t a remedy. It’s an injection of vampirism. Is Morbius’ cure worse than the disease?

9. Infinite Storm

Pam Bales is a search and rescue volunteer. She’s also a real person. Infinite Storm is based on a tragic, true and transparent story. While hiking at the top of Mount Washington, Pam finds herself at the centre of a fierce storm. She sees someone wearing only sneakers. Through a dangerous and dramatic descent, Pam helps this stranger back to safety. The obstacles are plentiful. Almost drowning. Nearly freezing. Flashbacks to the gas leak that killed her daughters.

Will Pam find out the identity of the stranger she sets about saving? Sometimes there’s no need for fiction. Real life is dramatic enough.

10. Trap

Dads get it. A pop concert with your daughter feels like a massive chore. They will forever be scarred from that night at the Eras tour. But at least the height of the pain was the screaming teens and cowboy hats. Not a deranged, people-chopping killer – the Butcher – hidden somewhere in the crowd. Or is he in the crowd? He could be anywhere.

This psychological horror is set to get you peeking out from behind the pillow. And questioning if you ever want to go a concert again. Good job you have Netflix streaming for entertainment, right?
